Building Strong Foundations
In today’s world, education has to be about more than just academic success. At Pembroke, we believe it’s about nurturing well-rounded individuals who are kind, empathetic, and emotionally intelligent. When we listened to this podcast, we realised that the Think Equal programme needed to be embedded into our Pre-Prep curriculum, giving our youngest learners a strong foundation in social and emotional development from the very start.
What is Think Equal?
Think Equal is a pioneering global initiative that gives young children the essential life skills they need in order to thrive. Designed to promote emotional intelligence, resilience, and social awareness, the programme introduces key themes such as kindness, respect, and self-regulation through engaging stories, interactive activities, and thoughtful discussions.
By integrating Think Equal into our daily learning, we are ensuring that our little ones not only grow academically but also develop the emotional literacy that will serve them throughout their lives.
When do we start our Think Equal programme?
Although social and emotional learning starts at 6 months in Pre Prep, the Think Equal program starts at 3 years. We are proud that we prioritise emotional well-being. Through Think Equal, our pupils explore age-appropriate stories that introduce diverse characters and real-world scenarios, helping them understand different perspectives and emotions. These stories spark conversations that build empathy, teach problem-solving skills, and encourage positive social interactions.
In our classrooms, you’ll find children actively engaging in role-play, discussing their feelings, and learning how to express themselves in a constructive manner. Teachers guide them through exercises that reinforce self-regulation, cooperation, and respect for others—key qualities that underpin healthy relationships and positive learning experiences.
The Impact on Our Pupils
We have already seen remarkable benefits from incorporating Think Equal into our curriculum. Children are more confident in articulating their emotions, resolving conflicts peacefully, and demonstrating empathy towards their peers. They are learning the power of kindness and the importance of inclusion, creating a warm and supportive school community where every child feels valued and understood.
One study found that for every one point more of social competence, children are two times more likely to attain a college degree, 54% more likely to earn a high school diploma and 46% more likely to have a full-time job by the age of 25.
By giving our pupils this strong start in social and emotional learning, we are setting them up for success – not just in school, but in life. At Pembroke, we are proud to be cultivating future leaders who are not only intellectually capable but also emotionally intelligent and socially responsible.
