In today’s world, where screens seem to dominate so much of childhood, Shackland reminds us of the simple joys of growing up: spending time with friends, exploring the outdoors, and building something marvellous out of whatever nature provides.
What’s Shackland All About?
Imagine this: a dedicated part of the school grounds where pupils can gather natural materials, grab a few tools, and bring their wildest ideas to life. We’ve got a Junior Shackland for our younger children and a main Shackland for the older lot, so everyone has the space to make their mark.
There are no instructions here—just the freedom to dream up something brilliant and figure out how to make it happen. Along the way, pupils encounter challenges, solve problems, and learn to work as a team (with the occasional spirited debate about whose idea is best!).
Building Resilience, One Shack at a Time
Shackland isn’t just about building forts; it’s about building resilience. Children face real challenges—whether it’s balancing a wobbly beam, working out how to fix a problem, or deciding who gets to join their team—and they learn to persevere when things don’t quite go to plan.
There’s no one hovering to swoop in and sort things out. Instead, pupils are encouraged to have a go, ask for help if they need it, and then try again. It’s a lesson in persistence that’s invaluable in life, all wrapped up in a day of play.
Letting Creativity Take the Lead
One of the joys of Shackland is how much freedom it gives pupils to be creative and independent. They decide what to build, how to go about it, and who they’d like to work with. It’s their project from start to finish, and the sense of achievement they feel when it’s done is immense.
And because they’re working together without constant adult intervention, they naturally develop skills like leadership, teamwork, and communication. It’s amazing what they can achieve when left to their own devices!
Fresh Air and Big Adventures
And then there’s the physical side of Shackland. Whether they’re hauling branches, balancing logs, or just racing around with their friends, pupils are moving, exploring, and connecting with nature. It’s not just good for their bodies—it’s fantastic for their minds too.
Studies consistently show that outdoor play is essential for children’s development, and Shackland is living proof. It’s where they build strength, confidence, and a sense of adventure, all while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
Why Shackland Matters
Life doesn’t come with a set of instructions, and Shackland is the perfect place for children to practise dealing with the unexpected. It’s a space where they can learn that setbacks aren’t failures—they’re opportunities to grow. It’s about building confidence, sparking creativity, and discovering that they can handle challenges and come out stronger for it.
At Pembroke House, we believe that these lessons are just as important as what happens in the classroom. Shackland is one of the ways we ensure our pupils are ready to face the world, with smiles on their faces and plenty of stories to share.
