Dear Parents,
So much is happening at school and thus I felt I should keep the letters coming! If you can possibly find time to read this letter, I think it would really help you plan ahead. I try to help by adding in lots of headings. Hopefully, this should help you focus on the bits you are most interested in.
The Year 8 Mount Kenya Trip
Please read the report which was read by Kilua McBride in Chapel this week. I also attach the slide show of the trip kindly put together by Laelia Surtees. Do take the time to click, sit back and enjoy some fabulous photos and video clips of this wonderful trip.
Almost 75 years to the day, after Felice Benuzzi’s book, “No Picnic On Mount Kenya”, was initially published, we set off… with about 75 porters in tow… some of whom appeared to be showing the effects of altitude sickness (namely dizziness, disorientation and nausea) even at the Chogoria Gate.
The 3 brave Italian prisoners of war who attempted to summit Africa’s second highest peak were replaced by 3 brave Savage Wilderness leaders in the form of Renson, Andreas and Alex.
This was a cross curricular planned trip if ever we had seen one:
For Renson provided us with a chance to debate the forms of irony in English, for how could a man, so comfortable at such great heights above sea level as 5000m, barely trouble the 5 foot line above terra firma even with a woolly hat on?!
Bishop Odera may have to keep his wits about him in the TPR department as it would appear to have been Andreas’ speciality, as the sage, old German not only took on the priestly gait of one carrying a bible down the pews during a Catholic Mass, which… combined with his reminders that death awaited us around most corners… provided us with much to ponder as we trudged on.
Ah to trudge… the slow, weary, yet determined walk of those who have nothing left…except the will to simply, soldier on. That is, unless you were within earshot of Alex who motivated us in his own, unique American tones to pick up the pace and surge forward yet again… His contribution to our departmental theme being not only the welcomed geographic information of the area, but also a reminder as to the welcomed geographic distance, uh difference, of America.
I am famous for my time keeping, or lack thereof, so before we delay our move towards the first lesson of the day, on behalf of all the Year 8s, a heartfelt thank you to both the Savage Wilderness and Pembroke House teams for making this such a wonderful experience for us all.

Festival Report
U9 Boys and Girls Hockey Festival
Thursday March
The U9s travelled to Hillcrest for their much awaited hockey festival, which proved to be a fantastic and busy day of sport. The new format saw all teams play each other over the course of the day (9 matches in total), with a 10 minute match happening every half an hour; this made for a high paced and thrilling day out, with our hockey skills and understanding of the game improving through so many competitive matches, against new and varied opposition. While all the children tried their very best and showed true Pembroke Spirit to the end, Justin Furnivall and Pepali Wood were awarded Most Valuable Players for Pembroke House. Results: Boys - Won 5, Drew 3 & Lost 1. Girls - Won 4, Drew 4 & Lost 1.
Boats & Inter-House Swimming Gala
Thank you so much if you managed to join us for this exciting morning. It was lovely to all be together to cheer on the children and huge congratulations to Fosters for winning the Gala - it has been a long time since they managed this !
Tournament Report
Girls Hockey Tournament
Saturday
The Girls 1st VII and U11A teams spent the Saturday of their Exeat at Peponi for the 7-a-side hockey tournament. The U11 girls played well winning one match, drawing two and losing one game. This placed them third in their group. Maltilda Mazinga was awarded with the player of the tournament trophy. Our U13 girls had a successful day, winning their group after two wins and two draws. We faced a strong Banda side in the semi-finals who eventually beat us with two goals in the second half. But we had matched them in the first half and showed how much we had improved since our match with them earlier on in the term. Neema Ruwa, Dorcas Kiundu and Vesper Murray were selected for the Up-Country team.
Up-coming events
IAPS Swimming Galas
The swimmers are very excited about the upcoming IAPS Galas which take place on Saturday. The U9s will be at Brookhouse, who are still following strict covid protocols, and parents will not be allowed to spectate. The U11s will be at The Banda and the U13s at Kenton. Both these schools are happy for parents to come and watch, but they will be limiting this to two family members per child.
Pre Prep News
Emily Rowe will be on maternity leave next term and Emily Kilonzo will kindly step in to cover her role in Reception. We are delighted to have Tiva Arkle starting in Pre Prep and she will be taking the Mini Martlets. Tiva is a Montessori Qualified Teacher who specialises in sensory play and who brings along a number of years of experience in Early Childhood Development. As always, please do contact Celina Ritchie or me if you would like any further information or help over any matters in Pre Prep.
Pre Prep Invitation to Alice In Wonderland Dress Rehearsal
Thursday 31st March 3pm
It would be lovely if you could join us to watch the dress rehearsal for Alice in Wonderland, the Senior School Play. The performance will start at 3pm.
Kindness Week
We all so enjoyed ‘Kindness Week’ last week, and the children responded well to all of their activities, workshops and initiatives. A highlight was our kindness tree: this was so popular that Miss Horner had to add more leaves three times! We hope that some valuable lessons have been learnt, and that the children will continue to uphold these as we go on with the term.
“Intelligence is a gift, Kindness is a choice”
On the subject of wellbeing - we hope to redo our Wellbeing Talk for parents at some point next term. Watch this space!
Safeguarding - Internet Safety
I add this section once again in the hope you might have time to click on some of the links below. Nowadays, one of the biggest problems for us all in protecting and looking after our children, is internet safety. We have had workshops at school to discuss this but so many of you cannot come to school, and so I thought a few links posted here for you to explore might be helpful.
The following Webwise is an excellent one for you as parents to look at https://www.webwise.ie/parents/ We would highly recommend signing up for their newsletter.
Attached below is a Parents Guide to a Better Internet. From the same website, this booklet helps parents to guide their children to have a positive experience when they are online. It provides information, advice and conversation starters about the benefits and risks they need to be aware of when using the internet. Topics explored in the guide include cyberbullying, screen time, sexting, social media and online pornography.
Then you need the tools to enable you to set up privacy settings and parental controls. The following website is a useful link and will help you here. https://www.webwise.ie/category/parents/how-to/
Please do not hesitate to get in touch with any member of the team here at school for help with these concerns and technical challenges. Evonne Wheeler, our Designated Safeguarding Lead, is always here to help.
Last Week of Term
Sedbergh Sports Clinics & Music Workshops
Sedbergh are very kindly sending a rugby and a netball coach and a music specialist to join us for the final week of term. This is very exciting for the children and gives them something extra to look forward to and enjoy as school comes to a close. It is perfect timing for these specialist sessions and we are most grateful to Sedbergh for supporting us in this way and adding some extra excitement to the end of term.
Crazy Hair Day
Little Princess Foundation and ‘Save the Children’ Ukraine
On the final Saturday of term, Ms Millar, our Head of Girls’ Games, is going to shave her head for the Little Princess Foundation, and we have also decided to take this opportunity to help raise money for the Ukrainian Refugees and particularly children caught up in this conflict. We will have a talk, in Chapel, for our children so they understand and appreciate what this is all about, and we will also have a Crazy Hair Day to allow all the children to join in to support Ms Millar and do something themselves to help these causes. Should anyone wish to find out more or make any further donations please contact Ms Millar. (Ms Millar +254 725875 601)
Alice in Wonderland
We are all looking forward to Alice in Wonderland which is all set for the last night of term, Friday 1st April. The performance will start at 6.30 pm and please do join us for a drink beforehand. The bar will open at 5.30 pm. We will have a party at The Martlet after the play and please do have a look at the poster below to whet your appetite
